Iburigako

The Akita pickles, called Iburigako, meaning vegetables (mostly Daikon radish) smoked and soused, is a local specialty that you will regret if you don't try. Gako means pickles of any kind in the Akita local language, which comes from the accent of “elegant (ga) fragrance (ko)”. Yokote-shi area, the southern and inland part of Akita, is the birthplace of Iburigako, and is generally made out of Daikon radish and sometimes carrots. Recently, eating this smoked Daikon pickles with cream cheese has become a new popular nibble for drinks.

Walk on the snowfield heading to the mountains of Yokote in early morning, we are going to visit one of the Smoked Daikon workshop where a local elderly lady works. It is difficult to do any farm work here in the winter, so she preserves lots of smoked daikon for the cold days, usually served with the local Jyunmaiginjyo (a type of Japanese sake which uses high polished rice only), Azakura. Sometimes people bring their favorite sake and enjoy it with this smoked daikon. Having a good meal surrounded by the snow, no one should miss this out.
Do you want to know how the famous Daikon taste when it is fresh? The local elderly lady cooked some for us last night so that we could have a bite of the freshly made delicacy before we leave, which will warm us up in an instance.

Kingdom of Akita sake Sake-Navi

A newly opened Japanese sake bar in 2016, serving sake from all 37 breweries of the Akita prefecture area. An all standing bar! More than 100 kinds of Japanese sake is here ready to be tasted. To get drinks, first go buy a ticket from the ticket machine, then pass it to the counter and exchange it for your sake and food. Sometimes Japanese sake events are held here, which would be a great chance to taste some rare kinds of sake.

Walking into Sake Navi, I cannot help but smiling at the full cabinet of sake! This night is going to be a wonderful night. There is a ticket machine here also written in Chinese, you can choose any kind of drink or some ham for nibbles with a surprisingly inexpensive price. There are no seats and we must stand to drink, but I like it that way. This Japanese bar has been popular from many years ago, but was on the verge of closing since the owner was getting old. However, repeating customers was not going to let that happen, and luckily at the same time the local government was wanting to spread the local sake culture, the government and people worked together with the owner and opened the reborn "Sake Navi". The reborn fashionable bar, a kingdom of Akita sake, continues open till this day. Akita dogs, sake, and beauties. You might just happen to meet one or two of them here.
I have learned a lot during my stay here. Such as the 10 year-old sake; called Kijyoshu, uses the sake made the year before instead of water. There are also many sake with romantic names. Some just actually made my heart to beat.

Yamamoto Gomei Sake Company

As a historical sake company since 1901(Meiji 34), Yamamoto Gomei is the only sake manufacturer which uses only mineral water of the Mountain Shirakami from the primary brewing step till the end. Also, not to mention the highly selected farm grown rice that are carefully polished. Their ultra-heat treatment and low temperature storage for the bottles are also an important factor to ensure freshness and quality. This sake company collects many kinds of renowned local sake from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and in the same time enlarging exports to Southeast Asia areas in recent years.

It was amazing to see how sake is brewed with the natural Shirakami Mountain water. But moreover, tasting the white unrefined sake in the white snowfields was an unforgettable experience.
You can tell that the owner is in love with sake even from a picture of him in a poster. He even bought an oak barrel from France because he wanted to brew sake in a French way. How did it turn out? I will never know. The sake sold out within miniutes.

giueme

You might be surprised to find an Italian restaurant in the countryside of Akita. Chef Sasaki came to Akita to start his own restaurant in Daisen-shi, in September of 2014, after 3-years experience in an Italian restaurant in Tokyo. As a concept of “grow locally eat locally”, he always uses the best seasonal food. Both Italian red wine and local Akita sake are ready for you choose.

His love and passion for the local food is what brought him back to Akita.
Look at the small apple on the bottle. An apple was not used, but believe it or not, it actually did smell fruity coming from a rice brewed sake! Fascinating!

Tsurunoyu Hot Spring

Tsurunoyu is the most historical hot spring hotel in the Nyuto Onsen village. It goe back to the Genroku period (1688〜1704). The sign "Honijn" (meaning the headquarter during a war) still left on the roof shows that it has a profound history. Even in Japan, a country of many hot springs, the 50 meters radius how spring here is very rare. There are 4 types, white spring, black spring, Nakano spring and Ryuno spring. Especially the open-air bath of the white spring is the most famous. It is said that the name of Tsurunoyu came from an old story, that a hunter once saw a crane (tsuru) getting its wound cured in the hot spring.

Spending time at Akita Tsurunoyu was one of my dreams. A chance for a dream come true came suddenly and shall I say yes or no… what a silly question to ask myself. Ofcourse YES!
As a hidden hot spring, Tsurunoyu is also famous for its mixed bathing (men and women in the same bath). It is an open-air bath nearby the roadside, with a milk-white color. After getting undressed and going out the door, the open-air bath spreads in from of you. I thought my heart would not stop beating being in the same bath with Akita beauties, but actually, everyone covers up with towels so it is not embarassing at all. Why not join??
